FAQ

What is the date of the Mardi Gras?

The Mardi Gras parade will be on 3 March 2012. Keep in mind that participants need to be there very early – so make sure you are available for the whole day.

For more info, visit the Mardi Gras website

I’m straight, can I still be involved?

Yes! As long as you are a queer friendly and generally awesome person – we’d love you to come.

What is the theme?

This year’s theme is ‘Love knows no gender’. It’s a celebration of the myriad of genders that exist within our community – but it’s also a little bit about awareness. Gender can be really restrictive, but it can also be very liberating. In this parade, we fuck with gender, mash it up and celebrate what makes our gender awesome, however we choose to represent it.

What does my $10 entry fee go to?

The $10 fee will go to the following:

  • The compulsory $110 entry fee that each float has to pay to be a part of the Mardi Gras;
  • The cost of banners, signs, paint and other materials; and
  • Light food and drinks will be provided on the night.

What should I wear?

Because this theme is all about gender – wear something that expresses your gender identity.

But to create some uniformity, please stick to the colours purple and green – particularly these shades:

Other than that – it’s up to you. If you need inspiration, check out the facebook page to see some of last year’s costumes.

What do I need to bring on the day?

  • At least 1L of water
  • Money – some food will be provided, but it is a long day and you may want more.
  • Your costumes
  • Some form of identification
  • Remember your entrant number! (This will be emailed to you closer to the date)

What can’t I bring?

  • Alcohol or drugs (seriously – I will pour it down the gutter)
  • Fire of any kind – sparklers, candles, etc
  • Animals
  • Any flammable or explosive devices
  • Anything that is a weapon, or that looks like one (no toy guns)
  • Too much to carry. We don’t have a car, so you must carry anything you bring.

I want to help out – what can I do?

If you would like to be involved in making colourful banners, learning choreography and other exciting stuff, come along to one of our working bees!

The next working bee won’t be until early January. The exact date and time will be posted to the facebook page and Allsorts website. So stay tuned.
